Conquering a Chaotic Garage
Tips &Tricks image Cleaning out the garage is a most dreaded task. Piles of belongings lurk in every corner, threatening to fall over at the mere hint of being searched through for a needed item. Car care items, pet supplies, gardening and lawn care equipment, sporting goods and a vast array of other things create chaos that will try to overwhelm anyone who dares to tame it.

It is possible to clear, clean and organize the garage area in such a way as to never have to battle the disarray again. There are numerous options for convenient garage storage areas. These range from simple cabinets and shelves to custom designed storage racks, peg boards and cabinetry. Placing a medium size crate or box near the door for collecting items that need to be returned to their designated spot can help corral impending chaos.

Determining what you need your garage area to do will help determine the types of storage pieces you need to build or purchase. Do you need an area for tinkering? A tool bench with a peg board for keeping everyday tools close at hand may be a great start. Perhaps you have an abundance of gardening supplies. Racks for storing shovels, rakes and hoes vertically against the wall are the perfect way to organize these larger items. Bikes can be hung from the ceiling during the colder months while crates below hold outdoor sporting goods.

Evaluating each item for usefulness is the key to properly organizing a garage. If an item is never or rarely used, it may be better to donate it to charity and not continue to store it. Truthful and careful evaluations will free up additional space for more useful things. With the garage completely emptied use chalk to approximate the area available for storage. Group like items together, by type or season of use, and designate an area specific for that group alone. Large cardboard boxes can be used until the permanent storage pieces are furnished.

This may also be the opportune time to apply a fresh coat of paint, wash windows and seal any cracks along the floor. A quick sweep and emptying of the collection box each week will be all that needs to be done to maintain a clean, organized garage.
